On the 50th Anniversary of October 23, 1956
Dear Fellow Countrymen, Dear Hungarian Friends:
Our plans, which we started in 2003, before any other similar undertakings, are now known the world over. We intend to erect a historically accurate and deserving statue to commemorate the heroes of the 1956 Freedomfight. We had fully intended to place such a statue in the Old Country in Budapest, as the first such historically accurate and deserving monument. For this reason we have submitted six competing models by five different sculptors every one of which was rejected by the “Budapest Galeria” for political reasons and excuses. After the last rejection our organization, The Magyar Studies of America, Inc. and its Statue Committee, with heartfelt regrets, came to the conclusion that we may not waste any more time in attempting to erect the statue in the Capital City of Hungary (where – it appears – only artwork as dictated by the representative authorities may be considered for commemorating the heroes of 1956), since we now have only a few months before the October 23rd unveiling.
At Kaposvár there is a commemorative plaque reminding all of the four young boys who were killed by a Soviet tank during the Freedomfight of ’56. The city is still highly patriotic. It has a clean appearance. And during the past decade it had become simply beautiful. Its mayor, after hearing one of our interviews with conducted by the “Kossuth Rádió,” called us to offer the most beautiful parks in his city as the site for our planned statue should Budapest relentlessly reject our efforts. We have finally accepted this magnificent and noble offer.
The statue will be financed by the world-wide Hungarian community, by the Hungarians of the world at large. Our non-profit organization will officially document each contribution and will send a receipt to each contributor thereof. The names of all patrons will be entered into an appropriate commemorative book. Patrons who contribute $1,000.00 or more will have their names carved at the site of the statue. Those contributing $10,000.00 will receive a half-meter (approximately two feet) high bronze copy of the statue. Contributors residing in the USA will, of course, have the advantage of a tax deduction. We respectfully request that our Fellow Countrymen, our Friends, HELP US BRING TO A FRUITION THIS WELL-DESERVED COMMEMORATION IN HONOR OF THE HEROES OF 1956! We ask that all contributions be sent to our account set up for this purpose:
- Magyar Studies of America, Inc. (Write “1956 Memorial Fund” in Memo line)
Address: 242 Kings Highway Cut-off, Fairfield, CT 05824-5394 (USA)
No matter how noble and sincerely felt the goal, without your contributions its realization is not possible. With infinite hope we respectfully await your financial assistance:
